Do green homes sell faster and for more?
Recent studies say that green homes increase in value and sell faster at higher prices.
The Appraisal Journal in 2008 states that every $1 decrease in energy costs results in a $10 to $25 increase in home values.
The Earth Advantage Institute released a report in 2009 showing green-certified homes in the have sold at a 3%-5% premium over conventionally built homes.
In addition, the study found that these homes on average sold 18 days faster than residences that weren’t green certified.
According to a 2012 NAR report, University of California researchers found that out of 1.6 million homes sales, green-certified, single-family homes sold for $34,800 more — or 9 percent more — than comparable non-green certified homes.
In a study covering existing and new houses sold from May 2010 through April of 2011, the Earth Advantage Institute, a nonprofit group based in Portland, Ore., found that newly constructed homes with third-party certifications for sustainability and energy efficiency sold for 8% more on average than noncertified homes and existing houses with certifications sold for 30% more.
