Net Zero Energy Homes use less, or the same amount of solar energy that they produce. Their main features are as follows:

Airtight, super-insulated building envelope – This is usually achieved by insulating the walls, floor and roofing structures with Polyurethane Spray Foam Insulation and using High Performance Windows and Doors, all of which prevent air, moisture and temperatures from entering or escaping from the home.

High-efficiency heating and cooling – Installing a high SEER / HSPF, Variable Speed, Multi-Capacity System together with a leak-free, efficient and Zoned Air Delivery System.

Low cost hot water heating – The most effective being a solar thermal water heater enhanced by an insulated, on-demand, efficient delivery system.

What are the certifications for green homes?

Green Home certifications and rating systems offer methods of certifying and scoring the environmental stewardship of a project. Different systems have been created for different types of projects. There are a number of organizations who have developed Green rating systems. Each rating system has been developed by a combination of environmental advocates and members of the building industry. As Green Realtors, Florida Green Home Brokers offers the service of brokering the purchase and sale of Green Homes that have earned the following certifications:

ENERGY STAR – To earn the ENERGY STAR qualification, a home must meet guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC).

ENVIRONMENTS FOR LIVING – To earn the Environments for Living certification, a home must meet the requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR program and, at the Platinum energy level, meet the U.S. Department of Energy Building America specifications. FLORIDA GREEN HOME – The Florida Green Home Standard is a designation for new and existing homes. The Florida Home Builder’s Association and Enterprise Foundation have partnered with Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc. (FGBC) with respect to Green Home programs. Projects are scored on stewardship activities in eight categories, with minimum scores in each category. A score of 100 or more is needed for certification.

HOME ENERGY RATING – A Home Energy Rating System’s (HERS) rating provides a standardized evaluation of a home’s energy efficiency and expected energy costs. Confirmed ratings involve an on-site inspection of a home by a residential energy efficiency professional: a Home Energy Rater. Home Energy Raters are trained and certified by a RESNET accredited Home Energy Rater training provider.

LEED FOR HOMES – The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) offers the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System TM for the design, construction and operation of high-performance Green Homes. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
