What makes a home green? A heat pump water heater
that extracts free heat from the air.
The standard home hot water heating problem.
Standard home hot water heaters usually comprise of a 40-100 gallon tank with either two electric elements, or a gas burner and heat exchanger that heats the water. The electric system is usually the 2nd highest consumer of electricity (the 1st being the air conditioning system), with the generation of electric power being one of the main contributors to air pollution and global warming. The gas system is less expensive and less harmful to the environment but still presents homeowners with an unwelcome and ever increasing expense for hot water.
Green homes significantly reduce this cost for homeowners by using Heat Pump technology to literally extract free heat contained in the air and using it to heat water. As this innovation is not yet able to always satisfy 100% of a home’s water heating demand, it is used together with conventional heating systems, in the form of a heat pump water heater. The result is an energy saving of more than 60% as well as a lower impact on the planet.
So what is a heat pump water heater and how does it work?
For answers to these questions, I asked an expert: John Verhoff of The Eco Plumbers, who provides professional green plumbing services in the Fort Myers area. Here is John’s explanation in his own words:
A heat pump water heater marries traditional electric elements and heat pump technology. Essentially a fan draws in ambient heat from the air and heats refrigerant within the system. That heated refrigerant runs through coils that wrap the tank and transfers that heat into the water within the tank. This process creates the same amount of hot water as a traditional 50 gallon electric hot water heater using only a fraction of the energy.
Here at the Eco Plumbers, we prefer to use the GE GeoSpring heat pump water heater. This system can save up to $320 per year and exceeds ENERGY STAR standards with an Energy Factor Rating of 2.4. It also comes equipped with a 10 year standard warranty, which makes it a great choice for the environment, your wallet and your peace of mind. John can be reached at 239-220-9668.
