Our Green Home Expertise is your holistic,
“whole house” decision making advantage.

Green home design

Unlike standard homes, every feature in a green home impacts all of the others, either positively or negatively with regards to, energy cost, occupant health, carbon footprint, and property value.

We are trained and qualified to help you to understand each feature’s effect on the others, and make the right choices for your home.

Examples are:

  1. Should you invest in better windows, less insulation or a bigger AC?

Thermal windows come with vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, wood or steel frames, in different sizes, 2 or 3 panes of glass, impact or non, low-E 2 or 3, argon or krypton gas, each labeled with 5 different performance ratings. The windows that you choose will affect the required capacity and cost of the home’s heating and cooling system, as well as the amount, type, rating, and location of insulation.

As certified energy raters we can do the inter-relative calculations and show you how each option impacts the other, so that you can make the best “whole house” holistic decision for you and your family. Learn more about an Energy Rating for your home.

  1. Which green features will give you the greatest return on investment?

The type, size the technology, quality and location of water, electricity and gas consuming features all effect the cost of owning a home and are all interrelated. A proper understanding of how each affects the final energy rating, usage and cost, compared to standard alternatives, determines the return on investment.

As Eco-Brokers, we have been trained to show you how each impacts a home’s resale value in the short and long term. We can also show you the impact that the invested savings will have on your ability to reduce your chosen mortgage repayment term, resulting interest saved, and return on investment.

  1. Which green features will provide you with the best and most cost effective air quality for your specific needs?

The level of reduced VOC in paint, formaldehyde in cabinetry, fire retardant and other toxic chemicals in flooring,  and infiltration level of air through the home shell , each has and inter relative effect on the appropriate choice of mechanical ventilation, air filtration and purification features. They in turn can use different technologies that affect the performance, capacity and cost of the heating and cooling system, which ultimately also affects the home’s energy consumption.

As LEED accredited professionals, we are trained to show you how each option impacts the other, so that you can make the best holistic “whole house” decision.

  1. Which green home features will give you the least expensive path to net zero?

In order to eliminate the cost of energy for your home, you have to invest in a solar system. This can prove to be a big investment, unless you adopt the right strategy to reduce its cost.

Selecting the most economical mix of energy conserving green features is currently the best prerequisite strategy to reduce the required size and cost of a solar eclectic system.

Once the holistic mix of green features have been made, only then can a decision be made about the size, type, position, efficiency and number of solar panels that are required to take your home to net zero. More information on the least expensive path to a zero energy home can be found here.
