What makes a home green? A 2-Stage Air Conditioner.

2-Stage Air Conditioner image – Florida Green Home Brokers The problem with standard home air conditioners is that they are usually as powerful as they need to be to take care of the hottest day of the year, something that they must be able to do in order to satisfy consumers. However, there is only one hottest day in the year, and they will use the same amount of power every day, for the remaining 364 days of the year. This is much like driving your car with your foot flat on the gas pedal at all times. Not a very energy efficient idea.

Green homes overcome this problem by introducing air conditioners that vary their power requirement and operation speed as is needed on any particular day of the year, and therefore, also their energy consumption.

So how is this possible?

A 2-Stage Air Conditioner unit is like having two units in one.  For example, a 3-4 ton unit has both 3 and 4 ton capabilities.  Some use two compressors while others use what’s called an unloader.  Either way, because it is essentially two units in one, it has the capability to run as a larger unit (more tonnage) when needed and a smaller one (less tonnage) when needed.

2-Stage Air Conditioners have great Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratios (SEER) which makes them of the highest efficiency.  The higher the SEER rating the more efficient the unit is resulting in lower energy usage and lower electric bills.  Power companies give rebates when installing higher SEER units because they save energy.

These units generally cost more money, but they have a great return on investment and typically have a better manufacturers’ warranty.  Saving energy, saving money – while making your home or office green- seems like a no-brainer to me!”
